Childhood Trauma Not Linked to Opiate Addiction

Experiencing traumatic events does not increase addiction to painkillers among those with chronic pain, according to a study from Geisinger’s Center for Health Research.

Dr. Joseph Boscarino and his colleagues ruled out childhood trauma as a factor, as well as age, gender, income, education, and current stress levels. They did isolate four factors that are likely to show up among people with chronic pain who become addicted to drugs, and they are having a history of substance abuse, using psychiatric medications, depression, and being under 65 years old.

Dr. Boscarino said the study could help doctors predict which patients will develop addictions to prescription medications.
